What do I need to do when I move out of my apartment?

School’s ending, the summer is here, and you have to move out of your apartment. Other than picking up your stuff and leaving, what do you need to do? Around 1,500 students move-in and out of Granite apartments every year. So we’ve got this down to a science. Here are a few tips and tricks to making the best of this transition.

Clean everything and we mean everything. When we do a move-out inspection, we’re checking every nook and cranny to make sure everything is clean for the next resident. You get credit back towards your security deposit for making an effort, so it’s worth it.

Don’t leave anything of yours behind. If furniture, trash, or cleaning supplies are forgotten under the cabinet, we have to pay someone to remove it. So that means you’ll have to pay for it.

Move out on time (or before!). You’ll need to turn in any keys to the office. If we’re not open, you can put them in the drop box in an envelope with your name, unit and updated forwarding address. We have a tight schedule for when you move out and the next resident moves in; time is important, and once your lease is over, you need to be out. If you don’t remember the exact date, anyone at Granite can help you!

Utilities must stay in your name until the end date stated in your lease. Even if you plan to move out early, you are responsible for the utilities until the end of your lease.

Check your AppFolio account to see if you have auto-pay set up.  If you do, you’ll need to turn it off so you don’t make any extra payments and have to wait for Granite to process a reimbursement (unfortunately, we’re not allowed to do this for you since your bank account is involved). Click here to see a quick video on how to turn off auto-pay. It’s also a good idea to make sure your account is up to date and paid in full.

Lastly, your security deposit. Remember how it takes time to clean the apartment? It also takes time to process all of the paperwork for your deposit. We mail the deposit itemization no later than 45 days from your lease end date to your permanent address or the updated address you provided. We also email you a copy so you can see it even quicker!

Donate items that you leave behind. Instead of throwing out your couch, lamp, fan etc., you can donate them to the following locations:

Need help moving your items? No worries! We found some places that will help you move your items to the donation centers.

If you have any questions about move-out, you can email Info@GraniteSL.com or give us a call!
